Treat #71
: Consistency Rules
This morning I woke up Mad as a Hatter wondering what might be the source of my imbalance (I usually wake up happy). When I questioned myself more closely I realized that last night I had a made a very clear agreement with myself to go for a walk on the beach…and I didn’t go. I usually get instant feedback when I don’t do what I say I will do and this time the feedback was strong and showed up as anger. Okay, okay…I said out loud…we are going to the beach right now. I put on my flip-flops and off I went. Immediately I felt myself calming down as I walked toward the Kihei beach.
As I arrived on the beach I looked out into the ocean and spied the “water-walking ladies”…my eyes immediately filled with tears. Five years ago on my first trip to Maui I met them walking in the water very early one morning. I learned this amazing group of women (some now in their 80’s) have been walking in the water at the Kihei beach every morning for over 30 years. They walk for an hour or more back and forth from one end of the beach to the other. They inspired me then and now. Today I focused on the level of devotion and dedication they have for themselves and their well-being…and that they continue to demonstrate it year after year. They show up every day for themselves. These women have been photographed for an ad campaign and they said recently they were on a Hallmark card. [If any of you have seen them I would love to know.]
On a parallel note, my clients have been sharing their challenge with doing the Weekly Review process and committing to do it consistently. (I deal with it as well sometimes.) I know when I commit to myself and do my Review I experience the lightness and clarity that emerges. Doing what supports me re-inspires me to do it again. If the water-walking ladies can show up and walk every day for over 30 years, I can do a Review once a week.
I waded into the water and called to them to thank them for their inspiration over the years and tell them how today was especially poignant. I loved being with them for a few moments observing the ordinariness of their action and the power of their consistency.
I reconnected to the part of me that knows the power of consistent regular action over time. It builds an inner solid foundation of trust and, for these ladies, a healthy and strong lymphatic system as well.
Walking (especially on the beach in Maui) brought me back into the moment, gave me room to breathe and balanced me back into my heart. I know my Weekly Review does the same thing for me. I am appreciating myself for having the wit to admit I didn’t do what I said I would do and for completing the action.
Bless you “water-walking ladies” and thanks for the inspiration. I think I will go do my Weekly Review now!
Martha Invitations
1. What is one thing you could consistently do to support yourself?
2. Watch the agreements you make with yourself and others and keep them or renegotiate them.
3. Is there something you recently told yourself you would do and didn’t? See if you still want to do it and give yourself the gift of completing it.
